Harry Barker was the former bomb aimer to “A” Flight commander Squadron Leader John Overton DFC. The following pages were sent to me via Harry in early 2000. Harry was a generous man who helped me with numerous enquiries relating to both No.218 and No.623 Squadron. Sadly Harry was killed in a flying accident in 2009 while piloting a light aircraft.
Flying Officer Harry Barker RAFVR. End of tour photograph.
The following pages relate only to the period covering No.623 Squadron.
Operations were carried out on the very night the squadron was formed. Note also the Night Fighter encounter against Berlin on August 23rd. Flying as 2nd pilot was Wing Commander Little DFC
September 1943. Apart from the raid on Modane Railway Yards a quite month
October 1943. Just two raids recorded in the Log Book
November 1943. Again just two raids flown. The heavy losses the previous months had restricted the use of the Short Stirling over Germany. It was also the final raid on Germany flown by the squadron.
Harry also sent me a copy of the telegram he received informing him of his D.F.C.
